David Moyes is the best manager we have had since John Lyall.

He should go down as a legend at West Ham. Keeps us ticking over in the Premier League with 2 great seasons and a Europa League Semi Final and Conference League Winners!

99% of managers would of fielded a youth team in Europe and got knocked out early or to Sevilla in Europa.
Conference League they would of done the same.

I always said if Moyes kept us up before the last game of the season and won a trophy they should put a statue up at the London Stadium of him!

Sorry- meant to have said: 'They are just very efficient with the ball when they have it and getting it forward as quick as possible in as few passes as possible HENCE WHY THEY GET GREAT RESULTS DESPITE REALLY LOW PASSING/POSSESSION STATS'

but got carried away rambling on....

El Scorchio 2:28 Wed Jun 14
Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
100% agree. They are just very efficient with the ball when they have it and getting it forward as quick as possible in as few passes as possible which again comes from good pressing play and granting their players time and space to pick out effective passes as fast as possible and they just go for an opportunity to put the oppo on the back foot. (Whereas with our lack of space due to being so deep we have to pat it around and side to side in front of 10 men looking for some opportunity and the oppo are so rarely out of position)

It's the blueprint that almost all the 'undermanned' small budget teams have used to gain success at least for a short while in the division. Relentlessly try to win back the ball as high up the pitch as possible, and then get it forward as quickly as possible either with through balls for pacy players to run onto or hoofed for a big striker to knock it down. Bolton, Stoke, Palace (under Pulis) etc when they had their success all did this.

To be fair the first part is what most of the big teams now do as well, only with the space they create, they use quick passing and movement to pass you to death with their superior players.

We can at least sit between the two somewhere with the quality of players we have/should be able to attract. A high press will make us look so much better. On the rare occasions we did use it last season, we really got at teams and unsettled them. Thinking the Chelsea home game. After them dominating us and only VAR preventing a 3-0 lead after 15 mins because we sat back so much and gave them confidence, after we scored we pressed high for 5 mins and they absolutely crumbled under the pressure. Seen it in other games too when we sporadically do it It just baffles me why we don't do this more consistently as it visibly and noticeably works.

It also relieves so much pressure and fear of making a mistake from the defenders as they are always put in the position of if you make one mistake, it's likely a goal.

Aaaaanyway. I just don't get why Moyes doesn't see it. It seems so obvious even to me.

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
I agree with that, El Scorch, based on what I saw of them last season. I just questioned them being a passing possession team when the STATS suggest the exact opposite.

Brentford's STATS with passing and possession (and even stuff like arial duels) are very similar to ours. They've just been WAY more positive, and as you've said, 2 WAY better strikers than a lumbering Antonio up front.

El Scorchio 1:43 Wed Jun 14
Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
Difference between us and Brentford is they play POSITIVE and EFFECTIVE and efficient football.

They press much higher and with more intensity rather than retreating to the edge of their area every time. Therefore if/when they do win the ball back, automatically their midfield or defence has so much more space in which to work the ball out. They also commit men forward quickly and effectively as a unit whereas we just have 1-2 isolated runners and our attacks break down. It also helps they have Toney and Mbeumo (who i think is underrated and has been decent every time I've seen them play) both of whom are very good in their roles.

because we defend so deep, when we win the ball back, the opposition doesn't really need to make much effort to press and deny space, because they are already right up the pitch in our faces so we are instantly under pressure which is why we give the ball away so oftan and why we find it so hard to get our of our own half.

So many of our ills could be cured by employing a better press up the field. We deny time and space on the ball for our opponents and pressure them into mistakes whereas at the moment we just let them do what they want, and we also take so much pressure off our back four and central midfielder, and when we win it, there's actually space for Paqueta and Rice to do something with the ball and pick out a pass. It also means the wingers can be more advanced as well giving us far more options in attack.

If even I can see this, it baffles me how Moyes doesn;t. Just playing a few yards higher up the pitch and employing a higher press would make us so much better and more effective, I am 100% sure of it. We'd look far more like a functional team and wouldn't have the front players so ridiculously isolated all the time.

And it's so simple. Doesn't even rely on footballing skills. Just fitness and each player knowing their role at specific times. It's a really easy fix.

Brentford play passing (19th worst in the league) possession (16th worst in the league) football?

How much have you seen of them, Swiss?

Re: Let’s give David Moyes some credit
People saying we can’t play passing possession football as you have to a Man City. Well Brighton and Brentford have done OK on far less budget. It’s down to the manager and I don’t want another season of this dour football under Moyes.

We have a double winning youth team. Do you think he'll give meaningful opportunities to the likes of Mubama? Will he fuck.

Probably a good move Manuel. the phenomenon that has occured here at WHO is known as the 'herd mentality' . It started out as a site where everybody held a different opinion, possibly 2 or 3 on the same subject per day.. And slowly over the space of 25 years morphed into a (and I do not mean this disrespectfully) a male Mumsnet for aging West Ham fans, who now all share the same social norms and opinions re life. A lot of good has come from this mind you.

In fact the changes within WHO would make an interesting study for a media student for a PhD. How do internet sites evolve over 25 years? etc WHO has evolved into something that suits a generally older fanbase and thinking outside the box can rock the boat as older people find comfort in the herd group and all being right and knowledgeable together.

Brighton as a small club selling their best players with no European experience will nose dive next season
If Liverpool do well in Premier chasing the title again they will drop the Europa league
